BLUE LANE EXPANDS INLINE PATCH PROXY COVERAGE, ANNOUNCES PATCHPOINT FOR RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX
Eases Operational Burden of Patching the Leading Linux-Based Server Operating System
CUPERTINO, CA, November 17, 2005 – Blue Lane™ Technologies Inc. today announced it has added Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® to the list of platforms supported by PatchPoint™, the first inline patch proxy for enterprise servers. This is significant because in addition to the major Microsoft, Oracle and Sun platforms that are covered by the Blue Lane PatchPoint system, there are now PatchPoint ActiveFixes that instantly fix Red Hat Enterprise Linux software vulnerabilities. As a result, those companies whose operations rely on Linux software can now utilize any Red Hat ActiveFix to further ensure their system availability while eliminating the cost and operational risks associated with frequent unscheduled security patching.
Linux continues to gain ground in the enterprise server market. According to IDC, Linux servers posted their eleventh consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, with year-over-year revenue growth of 35.2% and unit shipments up 31.1% at the end of Q1 2005. As Linux deployments for critical business applications increases, the need for a practical solution to deal with security patches increases as well. PatchPoint for Red Hat Enterprise Linux provides an alternative to the “patch now, patch later” dilemma many administrators face when managing security patches on critical servers.
“We are focused on delivering PatchPoint coverage for the key enterprise computing platforms to ease the security patch burden for our customers,” said Fred Kost, vice president of marketing at Blue Lane. “The tremendous growth in Linux adoption for business servers creates a need for a better solution to support the change management process that frequent unplanned security patch installations introduce.”
Like the software vendor’s security patch, the PatchPoint System fixes application-specific software vulnerabilities at the root cause, checking for the same conditions and applying the same corrective action as the vendor’s patch. A PatchPoint ActiveFix is the inline, functional equivalent of a software vendor security patch that mimics the corrective action of the patch to address the vulnerability at the root cause. However, because PatchPoint resides in the network in front of the server, it requires zero changes to server software and does not risk disrupting the server and its applications. PatchPoint provides enterprises with a viable alternative to their current dilemma of “patch now or patch later” and the resulting downside risk of either decision. With PatchPoint, enterprises can immediately secure their servers and thus lower the frequency and cost of unscheduled patch deployments.
Blue Lane provides ActiveFix coverage for many enterprise server platforms including: Microsoft® Windows® operating systems, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Internet Information Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Sun™ Solaris™ operating system, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle® database, Apache; Samba WU-FTP, BIND, and Sendmail.
PatchPoint for Red Hat Enterprise Linux is available now. Blue Lane customers have access to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux ActiveFixes as part of their current ActiveUpdate subscription.
